And two days before my due date...

I am insured!

go ahead, cheer for me!

i'll wait...

...

Within the past year, Jason and I have become part of the "self-employed" lot. This means that insurance is expensive, but cost aside, pregnant women are just out of luck! Without having insurance for one year prior, pregnant women are unable to obtain policies with maternity benefits in Illinois. We had insurance for about four years with the same company, but that didn't count as our "year prior" because it was through his employer, blah blah blah.

So I began the process of applying for state insurance. Illinois has a program called All Kids. On paper, it sounds like a pretty great deal...but isn't that how most government programs work? Anyhow, I've been dealing with this program since April. Long story short, my application got denied in May. Yes...my kid, my unborn kid, was not one of the "all" who should be insured, apparently. Reason for denial: income too high. How does income matter when that isn't even the issue preventing me from becoming insured in the first place? Ugh... And my other issue with state insurance! Ephraim did get accepted when I was denied. We paid $40 a month for him to be covered to soon find out that only so many doctors in town accepted children covered by this program, and that they only accepted about four a month! Four! That would take me waiting in line on my cell phone and Jason on the phone at home on the first of the month to beat out anyone else trying to get their children into the doctor. That's just ridiculous!

Anyhow, everything is good now. I went to the local DHS office and reapplied, we bought Ephraim separate insurance, and I got accepted TODAY! Now I will not have to pay out of pocket to have this baby...whew!

...now if only she'd like to come out!

Until then, I guess Ephraim and I will just keep on hanging out enjoying his last few days of being an only child...
